The 2011 NCAA Division I indoor track and field championships were held in College Station, Texas the home of Texas A&M. On the men’s side, a strong Florida team edged out A&M by a score of 52-40. Rounding out the top 5 teams for the men were BYU, LSU and Florida State. In the men’s indoor 5k, NCAA cross country champ Sam Chelanga of Liberty was barely beaten out by Leonard Korir of Iona who finished the 5000 meter race in 13:26.01. On the women’s side, Oregon ran away with the meet finishing with 67 points. Rounding out the top 5 teams for the women were Texas with 38 points followed by LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M. Sophomore Jordan Hassay of Oregon took home two titles in the mile and 3000 meters. Hassay finished the mile with a time of 4:33.01 and the 3k with a time of 9:13.71 over Sheila Reid of Villanova.
Indoor track championship results are often slower than the outdoor track and field times. One reason is that the indoor track turns are tighter which causes the runners to slow down. A second reason both mens and women’s indoor track times are usually slower than outdoor times is that for the longer races, you have to run more laps. Finally, many athletes in the north may not be in as good of shape as their outdoor season due to the weather for their training conditions. In addition, many schools do not even fund indoor track and view it as training for the outdoor season.
